The following tips have been learned from 42 years of teaching, observing, and learning from many inspiring musicians. I hope you will find something helpful to you and your students.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Foremost<\/strong>: Be a great musician so you have much to give your students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vital<\/strong>: Be a great teacher so that you can share your musicianship with your students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important<\/strong>: Love the students, music, and teaching so that all are inspired by your passion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Musicianship:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Have students play a scale or key study in the key of your repertoire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Have students sing any scale or chords that they play. Use singing to help with hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Take time to improve tone and intonation every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 During score study, create an audio template in your mind. Compare what you hear to the template.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Use correct pitches and good tone quality in your own singing. However, if you miss some pitches to demonstrate articulations or note length, don\u2019t worry about it. Continue to improve your ability to sing on pitch on a regular basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Know all the terms in the score. Use correct pronunciation of Italian terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Effective Teaching:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Determine the concept you are teaching with each musical composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Plan for each rehearsal. React to changes in rehearsal dynamics and take advantage of teachable moments. However, begin the rehearsal with a plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Share your plan with the students: a) on the board; b) in a presentation; c) on a handout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Adjust the seating in order to maximize learning or performance. Don\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Expect students to sit correctly and utilize proper hand position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Show affect in your face. Students deserve affect in your facial expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Have the score in your head, not your head in the score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Use the composition to learn musical concepts as well as performance concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Have an instrument nearby to demonstrate musical concepts, pitches, rhythms, articulations, dynamics, and nuances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Good conducting is good rehearsing. Gestural communication can be more effective than talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Create \u201cflow\u201d in rehearsal by appropriately challenging the student musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Use correct musical terminology, not colloquialisms, i.e. \u201crailroad tracks,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Read and learn outside the profession. Study CEOs, coaches, politicians, and other leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Building Community:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Inject humor or warm feeling into the rehearsal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Catch them doing something right. Try to be positive especially at the beginning. Remember that praise is only effective if it is specific. General comments like \u201cgood job\u201d are not helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Get excited about what you are sharing with the students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Enjoy making music. Steven is a strong advocate for music literacy and has developed nationally recognized programs of excellence at the secondary and collegiate level. He has served as Chair of the Department of Music at the University of Central Missouri, Director of Bands at Colorado State University, Lafayette HS and Jessie Clark MS in Lexington, Kentucky, and Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Moore has a B.M.E. from the University of South Carolina and M.M. and D.M.A. in instrumental conducting from the University of Kentucky.
