THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY

The Jazz at the museum brings together the museum’s extensive jazz collections and archives, the prestigious Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, exhibitions and education to foster a rich and informative experience for audiences of all ages.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR MUSIC EDUCATION

The Smithsonian Museum of American History created Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) in 2001 to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz for the entire month of April. NAfME partners with Smithsonian Jazz to provide member access to an annual JAM poster in the April issue of Teaching Music and other resources.

CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

In Chicago, several institutions advance the genre’s cause, including the Jazz Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Jazz Festival and many long-running venues such as the Jazz Showcase and, of course, Symphony Center Presents Jazz, which celebrates the genre’s enduring spirit of musical innovation in its upcoming 2024/25 season.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE

Often referred to as the most uniquely American style of music, and even the original American art form, jazz is inextricably linked to African American history and culture. This article features one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, Duke Ellington.
